The Quick Answer

  • Starting price: $83,990 (Dual Large, the new entry trim) up to $127,885 (Quad Max Launch Edition)
  • Range: 329 miles (Dual Large) up to 410 miles (Dual Large with Max battery upgrade)
  • Seating: 7 standard
  • Tow rating: 7,700 lbs across all R1S trims
  • Best 2026 savings strategy: Costco discount + Colorado state credit + referral code

Why owners pick the R1S

The R1S is Rivian's three-row electric SUV — directly positioned against the Cadillac Escalade IQ, Kia EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 9, and Tesla Model X. Unlike most competitors, the R1S is built on a dedicated EV platform with off-road capability as a core design priority rather than an afterthought.

The “Kick Turn” capability (in Quad-Motor trims), 7,700-pound tow rating, third-row access via the gear tunnel, and over 14 inches of ground clearance in Off-Road Mode put it in a category of one for buyers who want both daily-driver refinement and genuine outdoor capability.

From an ownership standpoint, the integrated charging strategy (Adventure Network plus broad CCS/NACS compatibility) and frequent over-the-air software updates make the R1S meaningfully different from traditional luxury SUVs.

Range, performance, and key features

Range and efficiency in real-world conditions

The Max pack rated 410+ miles is achievable in mild weather and steady-state driving. Real-world range in Colorado winter conditions, with elevation changes and cabin heating, more typically falls in the 280–340 mile range depending on trim. EPA estimates assume mild weather and flat terrain.

0-60 and towing

The Dual-Motor at ~4.5 seconds is more than adequate for daily driving and feels effortless. The Tri and Quad-Motor trims (2.9 and 2.6 seconds respectively) reach hypercar performance territory. Tow rating across all trims: 7,700 pounds — sufficient for most travel trailers but watch range impact (typically 40-50% reduction when towing at capacity).

Off-road capability

Kick Turn (Quad Max only) rotates the vehicle in place via independent wheel control — Rivian's signature party trick and a genuinely useful tool in tight off-road situations. All R1S trims have adjustable air suspension with over 14 inches of ground clearance available in Off-Road Mode, 32-inch water fording capability, and full underbody protection. The R1S is genuinely capable on technical terrain, not just rated for it.

Interior and technology

Three rows of seating standard. The gear tunnel between the second row provides 11 cubic feet of weather-sealed cargo accessible from outside the vehicle. Interior tech: 15.6-inch center display, 12.3-inch driver display, hardware-ready Autonomy Platform (LiDAR equipped on Tri/Quad and on later 2026+ Dual). Over-the-air software updates add features regularly.

Frequently asked questions

The entry trim is the R1S Dual Large at $83,990 base MSRP, plus $1,895 destination fee. This is the new starting point after Rivian sunset the Dual Standard ($76,990) in March 2026 ahead of the R2 launch. The Dual Large delivers 329 miles of EPA range, 0–60 in 4.5 seconds, and 7-passenger seating standard.

Most R1S orders deliver within 4 to 12 weeks of order confirmation, depending on configuration and delivery location. Rivian provides updated delivery estimates in your account dashboard after you place your $1,000 refundable deposit. Quarter-end delivery slots sometimes open up if you're flexible on configuration — worth checking with your Rivian advisor in the last two weeks of March, June, September, or December.

Not in 2026. The federal Clean Vehicle Credit expired September 30, 2025 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Both the consumer credit (Section 30D) and the commercial credit used in the lease pathway (Section 45W) ended on the same date. Buyers who signed a binding contract and made a qualifying payment before Sept 30, 2025 may still claim the credit when taking delivery — verify with a tax professional. For new 2026 orders, no federal vehicle purchase credit is available.

For most buyers, no. The Dual Large at $83,990 base is the value pick — 329 miles of range, 4.5-second 0–60, and the same off-road capability as higher trims. The Tri Max ($106,990) adds a third motor, 850 horsepower, and a 2.9-second 0–60, which is fun but not necessary for typical use. Step up to Tri Max if you want the powered tonneau, the Sound + Vision Package included, and the All-Terrain Package as an available option. Skip it if you're using the R1S as a family SUV.

The R1S starts at roughly half the price of the Escalade IQ (Escalade IQ starts around $130,000) and weighs significantly less — about 7,000 pounds versus the Escalade IQ's 9,000+ pounds. Range is competitive: R1S Dual Large gets 329 miles, Escalade IQ rates around 460 miles but in a much larger battery pack. The Escalade IQ is a luxury cruiser; the R1S is an adventure SUV with genuine off-road capability. Different buyers, different missions.
